Cold Sores (Facial Herpes)
What Are Cold Sores?
Cold sores (also known as facial herpes, fever blisters, or HSV-1) are small fluid-filled blisters that typically appear around the lips or nose. They often start with a tingling or burning sensation before developing into visible sores.
They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1)—a very common virus that many people are exposed to early in life.
How Do You Get Them?
- Kissing
- Sharing drinks or utensils
- Skin-to-skin contact
Why Do They Keep Coming Back?
Once the virus enters the body, it stays there—lying dormant in the nerves and reactivating from time to time.
Common triggers include:
- Stress or fatigue
- Sun exposure
- Illness (like colds or flu)
- Hormonal changes
A weakened immune system
Outbreaks often become less frequent over time.
What Happens During an Outbreak?
A typical cold sore follows a cycle:
- Tingling or itching sensation
- Redness and swelling
- Blisters form and may become painful
- Blisters break, scab over, and heal (usually within 7–10 days)
You are most contagious from the early tingling stage until the sore has fully healed.
How to Prevent Spreading It
During an outbreak, it’s important to:
- Avoid kissing or close contact
- Avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or towels
- Wash hands regularly, especially after touching the area
- Avoid touching your eyes or other sensitive areas
Can Cold Sores Be Treated?
While there is no cure for the virus itself, outbreaks can be managed and healing time can often be reduced.
Common approaches include:
- Antiviral creams or tablets
- Pain relief for discomfort
- Protecting the area from irritation
The key is to act early—treatment is most effective at the first sign of tingling.
